How to Fix Lifted Patio Pavers?

Published by

Over a period of time, you may discover that you need to fix lifted patio pavers. Older patio pavers can be a real eyesore, not to mention a tripping hazard. Whether you’re dealing with one or several pavers that have become uneven or have lifted out of place, it’s important to address the issue before it gets worse. In this blog post, we’ll go over the steps involved and give you some tips to ensure the job is done right.

Fortunately, to fix lifted patio pavers is a relatively simple DIY project that can be completed in just a few hours.

Step 1: Assess the Damage

Before you start to fix lifted patio pavers, it’s important to assess the extent of the damage. Are the pavers cracked or chipped? If so, you may need to replace them altogether.

  • If the pavers are in good condition but have simply shifted out of place, you can fix the problem by re-levelling the affected area.

Step 2: Remove the Lifted Pavers

Once you’ve assessed the damage, it’s time to remove the lifted pavers.

  • Use a pry bar or a similar tool to lift the paver out of its current position. If the paver is challenging to remove, you can use a rubber mallet to tap it into place gently.
  • Be careful not to damage the surrounding pavers in the process.

Step 3: Level the Ground

With the lifted pavers removed, you can now level the ground beneath them.

  • Use a shovel to remove any debris or loose soil from the area. Next, use a hand tamper to compact the soil beneath the pavers.
  • This will create a stable base for the paver to rest on.

Step 4: Add Sand to Help Fix Lifted Patio Pavers

Once the ground has been levelled and compacted, it’s time to add sand.

  • Spread a layer of sand over the area, making sure to smooth it out evenly.
  • The sand will help to keep the pavers in place and prevent them from shifting again in the future.

Step 5: Re-Install the Pavers

With the sand in place, it’s time to re-install the lifted pavers.

  • Gently lower the paver back into its original position, making sure it sits level with the surrounding pavers.
  • Use a rubber mallet to tap the paver into place, if necessary.
  • Continue re-installing any additional lifted pavers until the affected area is level once again.

Step 6: Fill the Joints

Once all the pavers have been re-installed, it’s time to fill in the joints between them.

  • Use a broom to sweep sand into the joints, making sure to fill them completely.
  • This will help to stabilize the pavers and prevent them from shifting in the future.

Step 7: Seal the Pavers

Finally, consider sealing the pavers to help protect them from the elements. A good sealer will help to prevent water from seeping into the pavers and causing damage.

  • Apply the sealer according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and allow it to dry completely before using the patio.

If they are quite old or have sustained significant damage, it may be time to replace instead of fix lifted patio pavers.

While fixing pavers is an excellent solution for minor issues, if they are in poor condition,  new interlocking pavers may be the best option.
